Bike safety event held in Barton

Ahead of school half term, we held a bike safety event at the Viking Centre located on Fairfield Drive.

The event was run in partnership between us and Safer Neighbourhoods between 9-11am on Saturday 10 February.

Free bike checks were offered to children living in the Barton area by our qualified bike technician, John Cavill. The Safer Neighbourhoods team were also giving out bike safety freebies including security labels, bike locks and fluorescent strips to ensure the youngsters will be seen when cycling in the evenings.

John Cavill, Project Manager, said: “We wanted to organise an event in partnership with the Safer Neighbourhoods team to raise awareness to young people about the importance of road safety.

“Many of the bikes tested on the day had very poor or no brakes at all, so we spent time replacing or fixing many sets of brakes, then showing the youngsters how to use their bikes safely going forward.”

Sandra Joyce of the Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: “We had a great time at this event and it was brilliant to see so many children coming along to get their bikes checked and take away some freebies. It was also a great opportunity to talk to them about how to be safe out on the road.”

The teams will be looking to organise a similar event in time for the summer holidays.
