Deductions for non-dependents

If you claim Housing Benefit and have someone living with you who is over 18 (except your partner) they have to pay towards your rent. This contribution is knocked off what you can claim.

The amount they pay depends on how much they earn. If they receive any of the following they may still need to contribute towards your rent.

  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Contribution Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Contributory Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income-Related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Statutory Sick Pay
  • Statutory Maternity Pay
  • Work Based Training Allowance

If you or your partner is in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (Care), Attendance Allowance or is registered blind you will not receive a deduction.
