Westcliff football team receives local backing
A newly formed football team in Westcliff has received £300 from Scunthorpe Lions, towards kit and equipment.
Westcliff Irons football team was set up in February by a group of local volunteers and staff at The Arc, to combat social isolation and mental health barriers. So far more than 20 people are signed up, and they have set up regular training sessions, which anyone is welcome to attend.
Staff from The Arc have also arranged for players to upskill and take part in courses including sports science level one and first aid.
Fran Rhodes, Estate Coordinator at The Arc said: “With mental health and male suicide such a huge concern at the moment, this football team is a fantastic step in the right direction. It will not only help
members to open up, but will build confidence and skills for those currently out of work.
“I’m really proud of our volunteers and would encourage anyone in the area who feels isolated, or like they need help and support, to come and chat to us.”
Terry Beisty, President of Scunthorpe Lions said: “Our group was set up to raise money for community projects, and we think this football team is very worthy cause.
“It’s great for us to help out other local people, and we’re really proud of the difference we can make.”
