Intergenerational housing trip underway for Ongo employee

Emma Garland, Policy Officer here at Ongo has recently embarked on a four week trip to America as part of the Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship.

The fully funded trip sees Emma travelling round America researching intergenerational housing projects, where old and young people live side by side.

Emma Garland, Policy Officer, said: “I’m really passionate about the housing sector and wanted to learn about how intergenerational housing projects work in America and to gain insight and learning to bring home to share within the housing sector. We have an aging population in the UK so finding new ways to bring the older and younger generations together to live within the same community is more important than ever.

“So far this has been an amazing experience. Not only have I have visited some really great projects and met some lovely people, I'm also learning lots of useful stuff we can implement back in the UK.”

The Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for British citizens to travel overseas to bring back fresh ideas and new solutions to today’s issues, for the benefit of others in the UK. This allows them to maximise what they can achieve in their lifetime, both as leaders and role models to inspire others, but also in personal development terms.

Emma was one of 1000 people that put an application forward to receive a fellowship, and was amongst the successful 150 people across the country to secure one.

During the trip, Emma is visiting a number of different projects to find out how they work for those living in them, and also to hear from the staff running them.
