Sport session success

A £10,000 funding pot secured by us has been spent over the summer months, supporting youngsters to be more active.

The money, from Active Humber has supported projects in Westcliff, Barton and Winterton since May 2017. These projects were run by our staff with support from North Lincolnshire Council, North Lindsey College, Twin Tigers, Scunthorpe Boxing Club, Clixby Sport, Young Harts and Scunthorpe United Football Club.

161 young people aged 11-24 have attended various sessions including football, dance, kickboxing and trampolening amongst other activities all with the aim of encouraging young people to spend more time exercising and being active.

As well as hosting sport sessions, the funding pot has allowed us to purchase sports equipment for the youth centres in Barton and Winterton. The equipment includes basketball equipment, a swing ball set and a three in one badminton/tennis/volleyball set for each area costing £720 in total. This equipment was purchased to encourage the sustainability of this project.

The final part of the funding is to be spent on 16 youngsters aged 14 plus completing their level one in football refereeing, costing £2,140 which includes the cost of hall hire and transport; meaning there is no cost for the young people.

Jemma Akers, Youth Mentor said: “We’re really pleased with how these sport sessions have gone, and we’ve seen some really positive outcomes with the young people involved.

“It’s great that we’ve got the football refereeing course coming up, as anyone that completes it will be able to referee children’s football matches at a weekend to earn some extra money.

“We hope that this programme of sports activities will encourage people to continue to be active, and that they can see the benefits from doing so.”
