Grow & Learn project
Our Grow & Learn projects are run in Scunthorpe and Barton.
They bring together gardening, growing your own fruit and veg and education to offer local people the chance to get out in the fresh air, learn new things and put food on their table. All our projects are run by John Cavill, who has not only won awards for his outstanding gardening work and rubbed shoulders with top garden designers, but is an experienced and patient teacher and mentor.
Volunteers sign up to an eight-week programme, although most stay on working with us beyond that.Small groups work together on projects to learn how to grow vegetables, fruit, flowers and shrubs, including new and unusual varieties.
There'll be tuition on mowing, weeding, planting, growing, pruning and harvesting - and you get to take home the produce you help grow. Experience tells us the volunteers also form new friendships, build their confidence and even find permanent work. All our garden sites are vibrant and provide the chance to improve your wellbeing, health and boost self esteem. But it's not all hard work - lots of social events are arranged too.
Gardening is proven to improve fitness and wellbeing and, what's more, you get to take home free food. Everyone's welcome.John Cavill, Grow & Learn Project Manager
