Caretaking and cleaning

Did you know we have a Caretaking and Cleaning Team? They're always out and about making sure the areas around your home are kept clean and tidy.  

Your caretakers visit specific areas at least once a fortnight and undertake a variety of different jobs such as:

  • Graffiti removal
  • Litter picking
  • Maintaining car parks and garage areas

They are also our eyes and ears as they notice abandoned vehicles and untidy gardens, report estate based repairs to our Repairs Team and help answer queries from you. They're a friendly bunch so feel free to say hello and ask them any questions you might have.

  • Where we check and clean

    We check all blocks of flats which have an internal stairs and landing every two weeks. The work carried out includes:

    • Identifying fly tipping and removing it
    • Checking fencing and paved areas and reporting back any problems
    • Ensuring that communal entrance doors and lighting are working correctly and report faults where needed
    • Litter picking the front and rear communal gardens within the boundaries
    • Checking for any fire hazards and report them
    • Checking for and removing graffiti
    • Removing cobwebs
    • Sweeping down and mopping floor surface areas
    • Wiping down hand rails and glass work that are within reach
  • Other services

    Our caretakers also check all open spaces at least every two weeks and do things like: 

    • Litter picking and sweeping up
    • Identifying and remove fly tipping
    • Checking and reporting any problems to paved areas
    • Checking and removing obstructions to walkways
    • Checking for missing manhole covers and stop tap covers
    • Checking street furniture such as benches and signs for damage or vandalism
    • Identifying untidy gardens
    • Removing hazardous items e.g. needles and drug paraphernalia

    • What do caretakers do?

      Our caretakers work for you to ensure the areas around your home are kept clean and tidy. This could be by removing graffiti, litter picking, looking after communal entrances or maintaining your car parks.

      They work on a fortnightly rota and check all blocks of flats which have an internal stairs and landing every two weeks. If they identify fly-tipping they'll remove it, they check for any faults or hazards, remove hazardous items and clean the internal stairs, windows and landings.

    • How are you linked to the Council?

      In 2007 we broke away from North Lincolnshire Council. All of our caretakers and cleaners are employed by us. While we still do work in partnership with the Council, we are our own organisation.

    • When does my grass get cut?

      We are committed to our communities in the maintenance and cutting of grass areas. That's why we have a Grounds Maintenance service. To find out more, click here.

    • Who are the people we often see working with caretakers?

      We often have volunteers from our Employment Support Team, who join an eight week programme to enhance their skills and gain experience to hopefully help them gain employment.

      You may see them working alongside our caretakers to improve your estates. Our caretakers are responsible for supervising both them and community payback workers.

    • How can I dispose of my old settee?

      If the settee is in good condition you can contact Choose to Reuse and they will come collect items free of charge. Please note: Terms and conditions apply so it is best to speak to them beforehand.

      If the settee is not in good condition you can use North Lincolnshire Council’s free bulky collection, where you have a free collection every financial year (April – March) for up to three items. If you have already used this, they charge £15.50 for all future collections of up to three items again.

    • How do I ask for a new bin?

      Bins are supplied by North Lincolnshire Council so you will need to contact them on 01724 297000, via their website or email

    • Who can help me with gardening?

      If there are jobs that you struggle to do in and around your home, we offer a Handy Van Service which offers affordable odd jobs, decorating and gardening service for Ongo Homes tenants.

    • Who empties my contaminated bin?

      All residents are responsible for their own bins, if these are contaminated it will be your responsibility to clear them.

      If you need more information on recycling to avoid your bin being refused, you can visit the North Lincolnshire Council website at or request a leaflet be sent to you with all the information.

    • Who do I report faulty external lights to?

      Report all faults within your communal areas to our call centre by contacting us here and the Ongo repairs team will come out to fix it for you.

    • How do we continue to improve?

      We have introduced Project Days that take place every fortnight where caretakers work in their teams to improve a communal estate based area.

      These are either requested by the team, by Housing Officers or by residents. So far, we have completed projects in areas such as Wells Court in Broughton, Lincoln Court and Cherry Grove in Scunthorpe, Cranidge Close in Crowle.

      We've also introduced Neighbourhood Pride Events which are events being held throughout the year to help promote taking pride in our communal areas.

      Our Caretakers work alongside our Customer Engagement Team, Housing and Tenancy Support to help educate participants of all ages on the issues we face as a team and how working together these can be overcome. So far, we've held a Big Tidy Up event, Easter egg hunt and a gardening project in our Retirement living homes.
