A day in the life of… Evelina
What does your role involve?
I am a Research & Development Engineer as part of the Technology and Innovation team. My focus is on helping to create smarter and safer homes through the clever use of smart home technology.
Can you explain more about smart home technology?
This can be referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT devices are connected wirelessly to a network (internet or other communication networks) and have an ability to collect and transmit data to other devices and systems. It can include things like smart sensors and smart thermostats, but the technology is continuously evolving and has huge potential if approached and used correctly.
It allows you to check and control different aspects of your home such as temperature, humidity levels, air quality, energy usage, plus motion and light. This not only improves energy efficiency and leads to lower costs for tenants, but it also benefits the environment and can prevent long-term issues such as damp and mould. It will also ensure homes are safe and compliant.
What work is planned?
Introducing smart home technology is an important step towards achieving our digital aims, but we will ensure nobody is left behind.
We will be assessing the different technology available and carrying out pilot tests to see what the best options are. It’s important to focus on a long-term view rather than just short-term solutions, so that’s why we will be involving tenants throughout the project.
How can tenants get involved?
We have created a survey to get your initial views, and there will also be some focus groups and workshops organised in the future.
