Active Humber award us over £3,000 to get people moving

We have been awarded over £3,000 to help local people get fit, as part of the Active Humber Tackling Inequalities fund.

The fund was designed to deal with, and tackle the ‘here and now’ issues caused as a result of Coronavirus. It also aims to help reduce the negative impact on activity levels of under-represented groups.

The funding will be split between teams at The Viking Centre, based in Barton upon Humber, The Arc based in Westcliff, Scunthorpe and our Employment Support office on Cole Street, Scunthorpe.

Over 12 weeks, each location will hold one session per week, for a maximum of 10 adults. There are no qualifying factors, but the project is aimed at those who are not exercising or cannot afford a gym membership.

The money will be used to buy equipment, including water bottles for attendees at the start of their 12 weeks and fitness trackers for all those who completing12 weeks.

Kerry Copson, Community Development Manager at Ongo said: “We are so excited to start these sessions, and are so pleased to be launching them in different places to get to more people.

“Since the start of pandemic there has been a huge decrease in physical activity for many people, which can have a hugely negative impact on mental and physical health and wellbeing.

“Having these sessions will encourage and motivate people to become physically active and will provide a good opportunity to socialise, and we can’t wait to get going.”

Sport England Insight has also shown that certain groups of people have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, which has significantly impacted their ability to be physically active. This shows the importance of project such as this one.
