Barton project shortlisted for Tesco grant

A community project based in Barton upon Humber has been shortlisted for the Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative, and they need your help to win.

The Bags of Help initiative will be awarding three grants of £1,000, £2,000 and £4,000 – all raised from the 5p carrier bag levy. The Viking Centre is one of three local groups to have been shortlisted, and will find out by March which grant they’ve secured.

Since opening in 2015, the Viking Centre has helped to transform the Caistor Road Estate by reducing anti-social behaviour, running new projects and providing a place for the community to enjoy.

They’ve seen huge successes over the last year, like launching a cafe, which two local volunteers started.  The cafe has since achieved a five star hygiene rating and both volunteers have secured employment with us, as a result of their hard work and commitment to the Centre. They also hosted an episode of the BBC Radio Humberside ‘Real Estates show’ in November.

The Viking Centre will use the grant to arrange more free youth clubs during school holidays, with new activities and games. And if they win the top amount, another day out will be arranged for local families living in the area.
