Community hub in Scunthorpe provides winter warmth
The Arc in Westcliff, Scunthorpe, has launched a ‘Winter Warmer’ campaign in an effort to support local families through the current cost of living crisis.
Members of the community can benefit from free hot drinks and a welcoming environment to keep warm, whilst saving on energy costs and meeting new people.
Once a week the team are hoping to offer free, hearty meals to families too, dependent on donations from local supermarkets and charities. They are also looking at a ‘Coat Swap’ initiative, encouraging people to donate items they no longer wear for those in need.
With the area coming under ‘20% of England’s most deprived neighbourhoods’, many are expected to struggle.
Kerry Copson, Community Development Manager said: “This is what The Arc was set up for, to be the heart of Westcliff and provide a safe place for people.
“Many are going to find it very tough over the next few months, understandably. That’s why initiatives like these will hopefully make a real difference.
“I’m very proud of my team for making this happen and am humbled to see so many others coming together to help out where they can. That togetherness and looking after each other is so important at the moment especially.”
Clarice, a local resident commented: “I had a really great time today, I was able to have a lovely hot drink and my kids enjoyed their time playing too. Thanks to the team, it’s a fantastic idea.”
Along with a café, The Arc also has a Post Office, rooms to rent, training opportunities, Employment Support Coaches, Youth Mentors and Housing Officers on hand. They host events, youth clubs and mental health support too.
