Des Hudson celebrates successful first year as Ongo Chair

We are celebrating the first anniversary of Des Hudson’s appointment as Chair of the Board, marking a successful first year of leadership and progress across the organisation.

Since taking on the role, Des has worked alongside Board members, our Executive Leadership Team, tenants and colleagues from across the business to support the organisation’s ambitions, champion its values and help shape its future direction.

Reflecting on his first year, Des said: “When I decided to apply for the role of Chair at Ongo, I did so because Ongo is different to many housing associations. Its values and focus on doing so much more than the core activities of a housing association really stood out.”

During his first year, Des has overseen a period of significant progress, including major improvements to our repairs service.

He said: “One of our biggest challenges has been addressing repairs and customer satisfaction in this area. Thanks to the hard work and commitment of colleagues across the organisation and lots of consultation with tenants, we’ve seen a transformation in performance over the last 12 months.

“While there is still more to do to reach the very best standards in the sector, the progress made so far is a tremendous achievement and a credit to everyone involved.”

Des also acknowledged the wider challenges facing the housing sector, including increasing regulation and rising costs.

“The pressures facing housing associations and the people we serve continue to grow, but so does the importance of what we do.

“Providing safe, warm and secure homes, supporting local communities and creating opportunities for people is incredibly important work, and it’s something we should all be proud of.”

One of Des’s highlights from the past year has been meeting colleagues and seeing firsthand the passion and commitment they bring to their roles.

“I’ve particularly enjoyed getting to know colleagues across the organisation and learning more about what they do. Seeing the dedication people have to supporting our customers and communities has been one of the most rewarding parts of the role.”

Looking ahead, Des believes Ongo is well placed to continue growing and making a positive difference across the region.

“As a regional housing association, we’re close to the communities we serve and better able to understand local needs. That’s one of our greatest strengths.

“My ambition is for Ongo to continue to grow sustainably, constantly strive to be the best we can be and be recognised as a trusted, respected social housing leader in our region.”

As he celebrates his first year as Chair, Des remains focused on supporting our continued success and ensuring the organisation remains true to the values that attracted him to the role in the first place.
