Local business supports our Bike Project

Our Bike Project has received support from Build Base to be able to continue running.

The project, which had been located on Laneham Street at the back of our Employment Support office, needed to find a new location as the shed is due to be demolished March 2018

The Bike Project is run by John Cavill, a qualified Bike technician. He works with volunteers to teach them the skills they need to be able to fix and clean damaged bikes which have been donated. Once the bikes are road worthy, they are given to clients of our Employment Support Team that need transport to get to work.

When looking for a new location for the project, Steve Marris, Manager of Buildbase was able to offer some space. They are located on Rowland Road in Scunthorpe. He offered a space at Buildbase to allow the Bike Project to continue running, which was generously offered free of charge.

Container King has donated a container to the project to use as the base for John and his volunteers to work from.

John Cavill, Learning and Growing Project Manager, said: “We’re so grateful to both Buildbase and Container King. Without their generous support we would have struggled to keep the Bike Project up and running and it is a project that helps so many people, so it would have been such a shame to see it end.

“We tend to see our volunteers start out with little confidence and lacking the skills they need to get back into work. After a few weeks working on the Bike Project it’s great to see them growing in confidence and enjoying themselves whilst learning how to work as a team, how to manage their time and work to deadlines to complete the bikes. We’re pleased that this project will be able to support more volunteers over the coming months and years.”

Steve Marris, Branch Manager at Buildbase, said: “Buildbase is a long established local company and we were happy to give something back to the local community. We fully endorse all the aims and objectives of the Bike Project and feel it is important that local businesses support worthy initiatives such as this.”

The team are always on the lookout for bike donations, if you have any to donate please get in touch with the team by calling 01724 844848.
