National Apprenticeship Week – Lucy’s story

As part of our National Apprenticeship Week celebrations, we wanted to share Lucy’s story.
Name: Lucy
Job title: PR & Comms Assistant
Team: PR & Marketing
When you joined Ongo: 2019
Q1 – Tell us a bit about your apprenticeship and why an apprenticeship appealed to you?
I decided that an apprenticeship was the best choice for me after considering my options to see that it would be the best way to advance within PR & Marketing. I decided going back to college to further my education would be a great option.
I chose marketing as it’s something I have always had an interest in. I first started working in marketing around five years ago, but knew I wanted to learn more and further my education and knowledge.
This is where I came across doing an apprenticeship, it gave me the best of both, working and studying. I ended up being able to put all my learning into practice, meaning I was getting both experience in doing the job and learning about the job.
In December 2019, I started working within the PR team as a digital marketing apprentice. It was a great role and has given me the experience needed to start a permanent role within the PR & Comms team.
Q2. How did you find out about apprenticeships?
I first came across an apprenticeship when I was searching for college courses. I was hesitant at first because I didn’t fully understand what it would involve. It wasn’t until I started working at Ongo, I realised what my apprenticeship entailed and how it would help me develop my marketing skills.
During my apprenticeship at Ongo I received a lot of training and was able to spend one day a week studying, to enable me to complete my level four digital marketing qualification.
Q3. What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship?
Take the jump! I would always recommend doing an apprenticeship, whether you’re just starting out in your career or even if you want a change after 20 years of working. There is no age limit to starting an apprenticeship.
Q4. If you had one sentence to describe your apprenticeship, what would it be?
I enjoyed every minute of it! It gave me the experience and confidence I needed to continue in my career.
