My case study – Teyla Widdowsen

Name: Teyla Widdowsen

Job title: Health and Safety Apprentice

Team: Health and Safety

When you joined Ongo: 2022

As part of our Apprenticeship Week celebrations, we hear from Teyla Widdowsen one of our current apprentices.

Tell us a bit about your role and why an apprenticeship appealed to you?

I initially went to John Leggott College to study Law. I only did my first year due to not fully enjoying what I was doing and not being offered the support I needed.

This is when I decided to look at doing an apprenticeship. It appealed to me because I liked the idea of being able to work towards gaining a qualification, whilst also working within the industry and getting paid.

I started as a Customer Service apprentice, which ended after 12 months, and this helped me find the course I’m doing now.

My current apprenticeship is within the Health and Safety team. I was excited to go into this industry because it’s something I’ve always had an interest in, and I was aware that the health and safety world is predominantly male dominated, and it was a great opportunity to change that.

How did you find out about apprenticeships?

After leaving college I wanted to find something that would help me learn whilst working and get a qualification at the same time.

This is where I came across Ongo Recruitment on social media. They were advertising apprenticeships, so I got in touch with Chloe within the team and she told me about what was available and how to apply.

What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship?

100% go for it! You can learn so much more from doing an apprenticeship than just going to college, because you’re actually doing the job all the time! And you get paid too, so that’s a bonus.

If you had one sentence to describe your apprenticeship so far, what would it be?

It’s been really engaging, I’m working with the best team and I’ve loved every minute of it so far!
