A high-achieving apprentice from Scunthorpe’s Ashbridge Roofing has been shortlisted in the Screwfix Trade Apprentice of the Year 2018.
The competition opens to all trade apprentices aged 16 and over in the UK, and this year 1,200 applications were submitted. From these, just 30 made the semi-finalists, including Lewis.

Twenty-four-year-old Lewis has been employed by Ashbridge Roofing for two years and was nominated by them for his talent for roofing, and outstanding approach to personal development.

Lewis said: “I’m so excited to be shortlisted for such a big award. The competition process has been loads of fun so far and I can’t thank Ashbridge enough for nominating me.

“To make the final we submitted a video about the roofing trade and my future plans. It’s been great to get the roofing trade out there more, as I’d love to see more young people getting into it.

“I’m looking forward to the rest of my apprenticeship and hope I can keep learning and progressing, so that I can one day start my own business.”

Zak McKay, Contracts Manager at Ashbridge Roofing said: “It’s a joy to have Lewis in the team, he is doing an incredible job and it’s great for him that Screwfix recognise that too.

“We’re all very proud of the high standard of work he has produce  both on the job with Ashbridge, and throughout his college course at Leeds College in Building, where he finished months ahead of schedule.

“We’re delighted that we’ve been able to invest in apprenticeships, and growing our own talent at Ashbridge. Lewis is a great example to show the value of apprenticeships, and has been a significant part of our decision to take on more young people in the future.

“This opportunity to showcase his skills is very exciting for him, for the Ashbridge team and for his college. We wish him the best of luck and hope everyone locally will get behind him.”

Just ten apprentices will make it through to the final, which are due to be announced on 6 April. The final will then take place on 27 April at the Google Head Office in London.
