Ongo offer stop smoking support to over 40 Arbor Forest colleagues, with more to come

In October 2024, we launched a project (in partnership with Public Health England and North Lincolnshire Council) with one clear aim, to help local people over the age of 18 to quit smoking.

So far, by engaging with individuals and working with businesses, the team has given advice to 336 individuals. One of those businesses is Arbor Forest, who since March have worked with us to host weekly, on-site support, and so far the response has been nothing short of incredible.

A total of 42 employees have received a Swap to Stop Kit, 39 have signed up for ongoing weekly support and most impressively, 15 colleagues have now successfully quit smoking, with many more on their journey.

Emma Colvin, HR Business Partner at Arbor Forest Products said: “We’re proud of everyone who’s taken part. Whether you’ve already quit or are still on your journey, know that you’re not alone. The onsite support from Carol and Jo will be back later this year and we’re excited to hear about more success stories.”

“This initiative is about more than just quitting, it’s about creating a healthier, happier future. We want to thank each and every person who has taken that first brave step toward a smoke-free life.”

Here’s what just some of those colleagues had to say on their experience, after completing the initial four-week programme:

Louise Newby, “I’ll be honest—for a good week or more, I found it very hard. I’ve smoked on and off for 18 years, and the longest I’d quit before was four. But this time, I’m doing it for my kids. I want to see them grow up and be part of their future.

“My advice? Keep your mind and hands busy, walk, dance, read, do what makes you happy. The ladies were very helpful, and I really appreciate their support.”

Kris Thornton, a 26-year smoker, said, “I’ve never tried to quit before this programme, but it’s been a lot easier than I imagined. Carol and Jo have been fantastic and the encouragement from my shift mates has made a big difference.”

Paul Meagher, after nearly 45 years of smoking, said, “I’ve tried quitting a few times and failed. But Carol and Jo were so friendly and encouraging. Hopefully, this time, it sticks.”

Carol Richardson, Wellbeing Team Leader and head of this project at Ongo, said:

“Supporting local businesses like Arbor Forest and seeing the real-life impact on their workforce has been incredibly rewarding. We’re not just helping people quit smoking—we’re helping them take back control of their health, their confidence, and their future. It’s about building a happier, healthier community, and we’re so proud to be part of that journey.

“If you’re from a local business, or if you just want to give up the habit, please get in touch with us, we can help.”

Treating illnesses associated with smoking costs the NHS an annual £2.4 billion, with the wider cost to society in England being approximately £17 billion a year.  In North Lincolnshire alone the NHS spent £149 million in treating smoking related illnesses.
