On Friday January 26, our Employment Support Team hosted an event to showcase the benefits of taking on volunteers.

Over 30 people visited their office on Laneham Street, Scunthorpe to meet the team and hear about how the Volunteering Project works.

On average, the team work with 30-40 volunteers at any one time. All of which go through accredited training, and have a dedicated Employment Support Coach to help get them into employment.

Scott Stalgis, Work Placement Co-ordinator and main organiser of the event said: “Throughout the afternoon, we heard from guest speakers who have worked with volunteers, and from the volunteers themselves.

“We’re hoping that by listening to their experiences, and explaining the benefits, some of the local businesses that attended the event will want to get involved and support volunteering.”

Steve Gilmour, Estate Services Team Leader here at Ongo, said: “I love taking on volunteers and can’t recommend it highly enough. Our team has taken on 19 volunteers so far and I intend to take on lots more.”

Liam Watson, Safety Inspection Officer, said: “Before I started volunteering I didn’t ever want to leave the house, let alone talk to and work with people I didn’t know. Being able to volunteer in the Caretaking Team was an amazing experience and really helped me to build my confidence.

“Volunteering gave me the experience I needed to be able to get a paid job with Ongo, so I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get back into work.”
