We support Hate Crime Awareness Week
We’re proud to support Hate Crime Awareness Week and stand alongside our communities in saying there’s no place for hate.
Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and welcome in their home and neighbourhood. Sadly, hate crime and hate incidents can have a lasting impact on those affected, leaving people feeling isolated, intimidated and unsupported.
As a Hate Crime Reporting Centre for North Lincolnshire, we’re here to help. We work closely with local partners to make sure anyone affected by hate crime or a hate incident can access support, report concerns and get the help they need.
What is a hate crime?
Our Anti-Social Behaviour and Hate Crime Policy defines a hate crime as a criminal offence that targets someone because of who they are. This could be because of their race, disability, religion, sexual orientation or transgender identity. Hate crimes can be committed against a person or their property.
A hate incident is any incident that the victim, or anyone else, believes was motivated by prejudice or hostility towards someone because of one of these characteristics.
Examples can include verbal abuse, harassment, intimidation, threats, online abuse or damage to property.
If someone reports a hate crime or hate incident to us, we’ll take it seriously. We’ll respond within 24 hours, assess any risks and vulnerabilities, offer support where needed and work with the police and partner agencies to take action. If there is an immediate risk of harm, always contact the police on 999.
Why Hate Crime Awareness Week matters
This week is an opportunity to:
- Raise awareness of what hate crime is.
- Help people understand the support available.
- Encourage reporting of hate crime and hate incidents.
- Promote respect, understanding and inclusion across our neighbourhoods.
By speaking up and standing together, we can challenge prejudice, support those affected and help create communities where everyone feels they belong.
Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home and community. Together, we can help make our neighbourhoods safer, kinder and more inclusive for all.
