We're raising disability awareness

We’re taking part in ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’, with a month long campaign for colleagues and tenants to get involved in, and raise awareness of important issues.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities was created by United Nations in 1992. It will take place on 3 December this year and will form their promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to leave no one behind.

Our campaign will see staff members providing first-hand accounts of the challenges they face in their day to day life, along with how our organisation offers support. There will also be awareness materials, surveys and videos to share.

A support and action group of staff and involved tenants will also be set up, who will meet quarterly going forward.

The aim is to bring likeminded people who suffer with a debilitating illness, or have a keen interest in understanding more, to support each other and review current practice.

Richard Morfitt, Neighbourhood Services Operative here at Ongo has been involved in planning the campaign.

When asked about it he said: “I myself suffer from a disability, which to most people is invisible. That’s why this campaign is so important to me.

“I’m so passionate about sharing my experiences, so that we can improve the lives of others and make our voices heard.

“I feel very fortunate to work for an organisation that already does so much, and are willing to go the extra mile and do even more.”

“There is always more than can be done, and by taking part in campaigns like this, and creating groups, we can make things happen.

“I’d like to thank my colleagues who have also shared their story, and to everyone who has taken the time to listen and get involved.”
