Cause for celebration

Our specialist dementia scheme, Myos House, is approaching its first anniversary.

As the first of its kind in the local area, the 25 homes have allowed residents with a dementia diagnosis to live with their families in their own space and to receive any required support.

The scheme has dementia-friendly features throughout including decoration, furniture, assistive technology and 24-hour on-site care provision. It also has a communal area for residents where a number of activities take place, including, recently, a celebration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Residents have also recently held a fundraising event which funded a defibrillator at the scheme, and they are due to hold a summer fair on Saturday 30 July to raise some money for garden furniture.

Dot Shearman, resident, said: “I love living here. I feel very safe, everyone is always friendly and welcoming and there’s something for us to do every day if we wish.

“We have recently started having tenant meetings which are really good to have as it gives me the chance to have my say and get involved in what’s going on.”

Eileen Salmon, another resident, added: “My favourite thing about living here is the social aspect. I lived in a three-bed house before while looking after my husband who had dementia, but I felt isolated. There is always someone to interact with here, and the support we have received is tremendous.

“I know I can call on the staff at anytime, day or night. My husband passed away a few weeks ago, but he was very happy here and so am I. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else now – it’s a great place to live.”
