Future Fest in Scunthorpe sees locals benefit from jobs, skills and opportunities

Future Fest proved to be a resounding success as it came to Church Square in Scunthorpe on Friday 26 June, drawing lots of people in for one of the region’s largest employment events of the year.

Hosted by us, the free event brought together employers, training providers and support organisations, helping people take real steps into work, training and brighter futures.

Throughout the day, attendees were able to meet directly with employers, apply for live vacancies, sign up for training courses and explore volunteering placements. Many also took advantage of tailored support on offer, including mental health services and skills development guidance.

The practical workshops on offer proved especially popular, including:

  • CV writing support and professional reviews from the National Careers Service
  • An electrical workshop with Matthews & Tannert
  • Woodwork and bricklaying sessions with Ongo
  • Interview preparation and mock interviews delivered by Jewson’s, Phoenix Software and Rilmac

The event also placed a strong emphasis on wellbeing, with dedicated teams on hand throughout the day offering support around mental health and smoking cessation.

Alongside the employment and skills opportunities, Future Fest created a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. Visitors enjoyed live performances from local singers, as well as a variety of food vans and refreshments, making it a true community celebration.

Craig Jarvis, attendee said, “I’ve never had a job interview before, so coming to Future Fest for a mock interview was a big step out of my comfort zone. The team made me feel welcome straight away, and the feedback I got has really boosted my confidence. I’m leaving today feeling proud of myself and much more prepared for the real thing.”

More than 20 organisations took part, including Ongo Recruitment, Ongo Skills and Personal Development, DN Colleges, The Arc, National Careers Service, North Lincolnshire Council, the Department for Work and Pensions, Citizens Advice, Lindsey Lodge Hospice, Tayto, John Leggott College, Ellgia, RS Security and many more—highlighting the scale and collaboration behind the event’s success.

Jen’s Special Place also shared their experience: “We spoke to a few people who needed support and information as well as those who wanted to support us through fundraising or volunteering. We were also gifted a huge bag of Golden Wonder crisps to give out to our young people by Tayto Group! It’s been fantastic to connect with everyone today. Thank you so much for inviting us and for all the support.”

Josh Harris, Social Value Specialist at Ongo, said: “This is the first Future Fest we’ve held and we’re absolutely buzzing with how it’s gone. There’s been a real buzz in the air all day with fantastic local talent, entertainment and so many people benefiting from coming along.

“It really was about showcasing the support available to local people and helping as many into work as possible. I believe today has achieved that and I’d like to thank everyone involved, especially the businesses taking part, for making it such a success.

“I also want to remind people that if you couldn’t make the event, please get in touch with our skills and personal development if you need help taking that next step.”

Future Fest was held in support of national Employability Day, a campaign led by ERSA that celebrates organisations helping people gain skills and move into work—something the event clearly delivered on.
