Celebrating International Volunteer Day 2025

International Volunteer Day is on Friday 5 December and we’re excited to celebrate the amazing efforts of our volunteers. This year’s theme, “Every contribution matters,” is a reminder that every bit of time, energy, and care given makes a real difference in our communities and helps create lasting change.

Since April, we have:

  • Supported 14 adult volunteer placements, offering valuable workplace experience and confidence-building opportunities.
  • Partnered with two local schools to provide seven student work experience placements.
  • Organised group volunteer projects, including painting and gardening initiatives that have brightened and improved neighbourhood spaces.
  • Placed a total of 71 volunteers, including 28 Ongo tenants, across a wide range of community projects.

Volunteering not only benefits communities but also transforms lives. One standout story is Luke, a school placement participant who, after completing his time with us, went on to launch his own gardening service, turning his volunteer experience into a pathway to self-employment.

Another example of personal growth comes from George, a volunteer who initially struggled with confidence but quickly found his footing. As shared by Dani Ladden, who worked alongside him: “George has done well. He takes a bit of time to come out of his shell, but by dinner time he was chatting away. He admitted he lacks confidence when meeting new people, but he did very well. He helped unblock a bin chute, cleaned leaves, and assisted with lifting.”

These stories reflect the true spirit of volunteering: building confidence, creating connections, and making a tangible difference in the community.

Stephen Gilmour, Neighbourhood Services Team Leader praised the dedication of volunteers: “The work our volunteers do is nothing short of inspiring. Every individual who gives their time and energy helps us build stronger, more connected communities. Their contributions, whether big or small, make a lasting impact.”
