Our festive round-up, as hundreds benefit from free events, gifts and festive fun
This December we brought festive magic to hundreds of our tenants, customers and members of the community with a series of events to bring people together, give something back and make sure those who may otherwise be alone had a place to celebrate.
Many families feel the added pressure of Christmas and the financial strain it can cause. That’s why we host free events to enjoy the magic of the season without the burden of money worries.
The fun began with the annual Dine & Dance event, where more than 60 tenants aged 55 and over enjoyed a two-course meal, bingo, a raffle, music, and a photo booth to capture the smiles.
One tenant, Leigh, commented: “After losing my wife in February, things have been tough, but days like this give me a reason to get out, put on some decent clothes, and enjoy the company. The staff have been so nice and it’s good to see the execs getting involved and being around to chat to.
“The atmosphere is brilliant and very Christmassy. It’s all about people, socialising, and making the most of life.”
The Arc and Viking Centre (our community hubs) hosted a variety of activities, including Breakfast with Santa, light switch-ons, arts and crafts sessions, warm spaces and plenty of festive food.
One highlight was the Viking Centre party, which over 40 local children attended. With joy and laughter as they danced, food, an appearance from Santa and Christmas presents to take home and place under their tree, all had a lovely time.
Grace Woolley, Viking Centre Coordinator, said on behalf of the team: “Events like these are so important. They bring local people together and create moments of joy that really do strengthen bonds and community spirit.”
Our retirement living schemes also embraced the spirit. Myos House, who are set to host a dinner on Christmas day for residents spending the day alone, held a Christmas party featuring carol singing, games, and a photo booth for residents to enjoy.
Pat, a resident at Myos House, said: “We love it here and are so happy. Spending time with everyone and enjoying the carol singing was lovely. I’m definitely feeling festive now!”
Lincoln Court welcomed over 30 people for a festive meal, songs, and games, while other schemes, including Ancholme Gardens in Brigg, Martins Close in Barrow, and Chesleigh House in Gainsborough, held their own get-together.
We also ran a ‘Gift of Joy’ campaign, inviting people to take a tag from the Christmas tree at our main office, and return with a gift. Thanks to this generosity, over 70 presents were donated and delivered to local groups including The Arc, The Viking Centre, the Homelessness team, The Cat Charity, Sangreat, Cat-titue and Whiskers, Blue Door and Lindsey Lodge.
Wendy Wolfe, Customer Engagement Manager, commented: “Christmas can be a difficult time for those who feel isolated, so bringing people together is incredibly important to us.
“These events are about giving something back to our tenants and reminding them they’re part of a community that cares. A huge thank you to everyone that has made these events possible, and from us all at Ongo, we hope you have a lovely Christmas and New Year.”
These events were made possible thanks to the incredible support of Ongo colleagues, partners, and contributions from local organisations Drainmaster, DS Projects, Doncaster Football Club, Mission Christmas, DHL Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire Council, We are Resource, Jewson’s, Grayton’s, Tesco, Ideal Boiler, The Wortley House Hotel and Taylor’s Family Butchers.
