The Viking Centre celebrates 10 years

This month marks a major milestone for The Viking Centre, as it celebrates 10 years of serving the Barton-upon-Humber community. Located on Caistor Road and operated by Ongo, the Centre has grown into a vital hub of support, connection, and opportunity for hundreds of local residents.
Since opening its doors in 2015, The Viking Centre has supported over 500 people annually through mentoring, employment advice, training, and personal development. More than 100 residents enjoy trips and days out each year – many experiencing new adventures with their families for the very first time.
The centre offers activities, including:
- Eight weekly community events: Stay & play, social tea, family fun, two youth clubs, bingo, café, and lunch club.
- Five weekly support services: Employment, counselling, substance misuse, and housing support.
- 30 themed school holiday activities for young people and families, promoting creativity, learning, and fun.
Beyond activities, The Viking Centre plays a transformative role in the community:
- Serving as a safe and welcoming space for all ages.
- Helping to reduce anti-social behaviour through youth engagement.
- Providing free and affordable food to combat poverty.
- Supporting the environment with gardening projects and estate clean-ups.
- Offering work placements and training to boost employment and mental wellbeing.
- Delivering food parcels, takeaway meals, and activity packs during the pandemic.
- Hosting warm space activities during winter to ensure no one is left out in the cold.
In 2018, The Viking Centre was honoured with the Groundwork UK national award for Best Community Project on a social housing estate, a testament to its dedication and impact.
Grace Woolley, Viking Centre Co-ordinator said, “I’m so proud of my team and what we have been able to achieve over the past 10 years. One of my fondest memories is our very first street party, where over 250 people came together to celebrate. Nancy Birtwhistle judged our bake-off, and it was incredible to see the community unite and take pride in where they live.”
Sarah, Community Regeneration Assistant said, “Organising our themed children’s parties like Halloween and Christmas discos is so rewarding. Seeing the kids have fun in a safe space is what it’s all about.”
Marie, Community Regeneration Assistant said, “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we organised a Christmas event that brought joy when it was needed most. Watching children wrapped up on Santa’s sleigh under the lights was unforgettable.”
Sue highlighted the power of shared experiences: “The trips we’ve provided – like to Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Cleethorpes – have created lasting memories. My elderly mum was even able to attend, giving her a chance to socialise and connect.”
Alfie, Youth mentor, spoke about the impact of sport: “Running sports sessions during school holidays has been amazing. Watching young people try new sports and succeed – even taking them up long-term is incredibly rewarding.”
Kerry Copson, Community Development Manager said, “My favourite thing from the past 10 years, has got to be seeing the development of the centre and the team who are all so passionate about ensuring customers receive a wide range of support services and activities. So, a massive thank you to the team for all of their continued hard work and dedication.”
As Barton-upon-Humber continues to grow and evolve, The Viking Centre remains committed to uplifting, empowering, and connecting its community – one person, one family, and one event at a time.
